On the Go TipsThere are many items that will help you stay on the diet with your on-the-go lifestyle. I am a law student with two jobs, so I understand what it means to eat on the run everyday. However, I do try to take what free time I have and spend some of it menu planning, shopping and cooking.
The first essential items is tupperware, jars or baggies to put your food in. Get rid of traditional notions of food transport. You don't need to have it look good- you just need to be able to throw it in your backpack, breifcase, diaper bag, whatever! I use some rubbermade storage containers that I bought at the grocery store for about $2 each (small single serving containers). However, they now have "disposable tupperware" that Ziploc and Glad makes. I bought some Ziploc containers- 5 round containers were $2.99. You can also wash out jelly jars, mustard jars and other plastic or glass food containers to use. When out of clean tupperware, I have also used plastic ziplock bags, these work great. In college, we even used to wash these out and reuse them. You can also wrap sandwiches with plastic wrap, tin foil, whatever you want. With all these, you must beware of leakage!! They are not perfect.
To keep things hot, you can get a thermos and heat your food before filling it or use the microwave (if available). To keep things cold, you can get one of those thermo-lunch bags (about $4) and put one of those blue ice things in there (they make small ones) or put a jar full of ice in with it. If you are going away for the weekend, pack a cooler.
Sticky fingers? If you want to bring fruit, but hate sticky fingers and don't have a place to wash your hands, put a damp paper towel or washcloth in a plastic bag and pack it with your lunch.
Forgetful? I am. When you make/pack your lunch (or day of meals- as often is the case) the nite before, put it in your car during the winter months (as long as your car is outside or in a garage that is cold). Or- put a not on the door that you will see before you go- or put a note on your purse, backpack, or briefcase.
All this might seem like a lot of trouble at first. The reward is that you will feel so much better and look better!
